A new Uber- style bus service was launched in Buckinghamshire.

Carousel Buses introduced its new on-demand transport service, PickMeUp, for passengers in High Wycombe on Tuesday (September 27).

The ride-sharing service is operated via an app, which allows passengers to summon a mini-bus to ‘virtual bus stops’, while a telephone booking system is available for people without access to a smartphone.

Carousel's interim managing director Luke Marion said: “This is an exciting week as we launch a new market leading demand responsive transport service in High Wycombe.

“PickMeUp will provide a new way for people to travel quickly, efficiently and on demand.

“I hope this fantastic service will further help encourage people to leave their cars at home when they can and help improve air quality in High Wycombe.”

PickMeUp is supported by funding from Buckinghamshire Council, and more drivers are still wanted for the service.

Flexible shifts run from Monday to Friday between 5.30am and 7.30pm, and require delivering excellent customer care.

The High Wycombe based Carousel, part of the larger Go-Ahead Group, employs around 80 people and operates around 45 buses in Buckinghamshire and neighbouring areas in Slough in Berkshire, Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire and Uxbridge.

Go-Ahead’s managing director Martin Dean from UK Regional Bus said: “We’re always looking for new ways to get people onto buses.

“This is an innovative idea which uses technology to bring buses to people when and where they want them.

"We’re delighted to be working on the initiative with Buckinghamshire Council.”

PickMeUp was first piloted by Carousel Buses sister firm Oxford Bus Company in Oxford in 2018.
