Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth believes that Peterborough United are ‘a very good side’ and that he expects the Posh to be near the top six at the end of the season.

The Cambridgeshire-based club will make their first visit in three years to Adams Park this weekend, with both sides having aspirations of returning to the Championship.

Wanderers were relegated from the division last year, whilst Peterborough went down from the league this May.

Ainsworth also admitted that he attended the club’s most recent fixture, a 4-1 win over Forest Green Rovers on Tuesday at their London Road stadium, as he prepares for the arrival of Grant McCann’s men.

He said: “We’ve just had Oxford, Plymouth, we’ve got MK soon so to say that Wycombe and Peterborough are tasty affairs, you could say that about anyone.

“Wycombe are no longer this pushover team that a few years ago, teams would look at us and go ‘we’ve got Wycombe away, that’s an easy three points’, absolutely not.

“I take pride in that so I think this will be a tough game for both teams.

“We’re on the same level as them and they are a very good side I must say.

“I went to watch them on Tuesday and they’re a very good side so we will need to be at our best.

“We’ve got a good squad with a couple of players returning from injury."

At the time of writing, Wycombe are 13 places below and eight points behind Peterborough in the League One table, who are unbeaten in their last four.

Ainsworth continued: “Peterborough have to be (one of the favourites to be in the top six) after being in the Championship last season.

“But, like us, they are competing against teams that get 20,000 fans at home every week, and that makes a huge difference.

Wanderers have only won one of their last six league games against the Posh, with this solitary victory coming in November 2018.

A second-half strike from Bryn Morris gave the Chairboys a 1-0 triumph over Peterborough at Adams Park.
