The return of Brandon Hanlan and D’Mani Mellor in Wycombe’s 3-1 home victory over Peterborough was a sweet cherry on top of a very satisfying cake for Wanderers.

Both strikers made substitute appearances in the win against the Posh on October 15 following long absences due to injury.

Mellor, who signed from Manchester United in the summer, hadn’t played since the 3-1 defeat at Exeter City in August, whilst Hanlan had only played one match this season.

That was in the opening day triumph against Burton Albion in July.

Their cameo appearances against the Posh showcased that the Chairboys have got an abundance of talent in attack, as they hope to launch themselves into the top six.

Speaking on the win, Ainsworth said: “Some of the top teams haven’t had the bad luck that we’ve had because we have had nine actual starters out which is hard.

“But they are coming back which is great.

“Brandon and D’Mani both made an entrance today [October 15] and I’ve got a great squad, I really have so once everyone is fit we will be firing.

“And if we can do that, then.

“I know what I have got.”

Ainsworth also thanked the Couhig family for the support they have shown in recent weeks, following several setbacks with results and injuries.

He continued: “I spoke to Rob yesterday [October 14] and he has been fantastic with me in terms of the backing and with the belief.

“He deserves credit as I never feel the pressure that I might make the wrong decision.

“Rob has been brilliant as he knows who we are as he lets me get on with my bit, and he offers to give me as much as he can.

“It’s brilliant to have that backing.

“The Couhigs have been fantastic with me.”

Finally, on the performance, Ainsworth concluded: "It took a worldie strike for them to score, but Max is proving to be a top keeper.

"I’m really proud of the boys.

"Wingy and Nick are doing an unfamiliar job but doing it really well.”
