Policing the controversial visit of US President Donald Trump to Bucks and the Royal Wedding cost the force more than £9 million, it has been revealed.

Thames Valley Police (TVP) applied for special grant funding to help cover the costs of the major events.

Trump's visit, which included tours of Blenheim Palace, Chequers, and Windsor Castle, cost just over £6 million.

As well as needing extra officers, the force used the funding to deploy extra security measures and to meet the transport and accommodation needs of staff.

Trump's visit saw widespread protests across the country, with groups also gathering near the Chequers estate with banners, posters and placards denouncing the President.

The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also racked up costs of £3.42 million.

Anthony Stansfeld, Police and Crime Commissioner for the Thames Valley said: “This year has been an extremely busy one for TVP.

“Whilst I am proud that the forces effective policing response ensured the safety and security of all involved in these events, it was extremely important for me to minimise the impact on local policing.

“I am therefore delighted that the Home Office has provided us with special grant funding to cover the additional costs incurred by TVP in policing both of these events.”

When policing high profile events, the force can apply to the Home Office and submit a request for extra funding to be provided.

The application has been accepted and it has been confirmed that 100 per cent of the direct costs will be covered for both of the events.

This means TVP will recover £5.47 million for Trump's working visit and £2.36 million for the Royal Wedding.

Trump's visit to the England back in July included a demonstration at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst with Prime Minister Theresa May.
