Seven months of roadworks to turn a roundabout into a traffic-light controlled junction in High Wycombe will start on Monday (January 25).

The mini roundabout at Crest Road and John Hall Way will be converted into an "intelligent" traffic light junction ahead of the planned arrival of McDonald's and Aldi at Cressex Island.

Transport for Bucks will be carrying out the work, which is expected to last seven months.

There may be some closures needed during a road resurfacing phases towards the end of the construction.

As well as the traffic lights, a new 600-metre shared cycleway and footpath running from Handy Cross roundabout to the Holmers Farm Way roundabout will be built, linking two existing cycle routes.

There will also be new toucan crossings installed at the junction.

Aldi and McDonald's are hoping to open up a new supermarket and drive-thru restaurant at the former Cressex Park and Ride, alongside Next.

The site has been a wasteland for many years.

Buckinghamshire Council transport chief Nick Naylor said the improvement works would help bring extra investment and benefits to the area.

He said: "Now, more than ever, we need to create opportunities to grow the local economy and support the creation of new jobs. With companies like Aldi and McDonald's looking to open here, the junction improvements are absolutely vital to increase capacity in the local area."

He added: "As well as the intelligent traffic signals which 'learn' how to manage higher vehicle flows in the best possible way, we are also incorporating better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians as part of the design.

"I really look forward to seeing the completed scheme come into operation."
