A PRISONER who fashioned a shiv out of a chair leg has been slapped with extra time in jail.

The pointed weapon was found under the man’s prison bed when he was serving time at HMP Aylesbury in May 2019.

The 22-year-old, who is currently behind bars at HMP Parc in Wales, was handed an extra four months by Judge Emma Nott at Reading Crown Court on Wednesday, April 14.

Judge Nott said: “A cell search revealed under your pillow a metal chair leg that had been fashioned into a weapon.

“There is no doubt that it could have done some harm.”

Despite this, Judge Nott described the “shiv” as “not a highly-dangerous weapon.”

She added: “Given the pandemic and the effect it has had on you [in prison], you have worked hard and the current reports about you are very positive.

“But prisoners cannot think they have weapons in prison and get away with it.

“However, you are doing good work and I want you to keep that up.”

The prisoner was handed an extra four months on his sentence for the unauthorised possession in prison of an offensive weapon, but he will serve another two months before he is able to be considered for parole and could be released in 2023.

Judge Nott continued: “Don’t be so stupid as to do this again.”
