A hardware store that has been a major part of the Beaconsfield community for more than 12 years is set to shut its doors for good after struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic.

Like many local businesses, Beaconsfield Hardware in Maxwell Road has found it difficult to recover financially from the effects of the pandemic - and have announced they will be closing down in three months' time.

Their sister shoe repair business, Shoe-Be-Do, will be remaining open.

Announcing the news on social media, Beaconsfield Hardware said: "It is with great sadness that we are sharing that Beaconsfield Hardware will be closing down in three months' time.

"As a result we are offering 50 per cent off all product lines, so make sure you grab yourself a bargain.

"We want to thank all of our customers who have supported us and been on this journey from the very start.

"Please note that Shoe-Be-Do will remain open for all your key cutting, shoe repair and engraving needs."

Sam Ellis, whose dad Karl owns the shop and worked Saturdays there for many years, told the Bucks Free Press: "Covid has been damaging for many businesses and it has been difficult to financially recover from this.

"Although luckily they can keep Shoe-Be-Do open, Beaconsfield Hardware has been part of the community for over 12 years and has helped massively in every way possible.

"From delivering items to those vulnerable during lockdown, to working with local businesses to attract residents and always serving the community no matter how big or small the situation."

He urged everyone to support their vital local businesses, particularly as many continue to battle the effects the pandemic has had on trade.

A string of Beaconsfield Hardware shoppers were left devastated at the news of the shop's closure. Writing on their Facebook page, one said: "Such sad news. You have been a lifeline through the pandemic with your deliveries etc. Yet another necessary shop that Beaconsfield is losing. Do we really need any more restaurants/coffee shops or estate agents?"

Another said: "Really sorry you’re closing and hope all the kind helpful staff have new adventures ahead. Thanks for staying open during the pandemic and for all your years of serving the community. Best of luck."

A third added: "That is so sad. I love that shop. It has been so useful with all sorts of random stuff. So relieved that Shoe Be Do is remaining."

Beaconsfield Hardware is not the first to have been left with no option but to shut down.

Back in January, Hunts Hardware in Station Road in Marlow announced it was closing after 25 years in business, saying the "devastating financial aftermath" of Covid-19 is affecting not just them but independent shops everywhere.
