Hidden away in the beer garden of The Antelope pub is the Bite Down vegan fast-food truck.

The owner of the pub turned vegan over four years ago and when struggling to search for alternatives he decided to have a go at selling his own.

Bite Down sells a range of fast-food favourites from vegan burgers, fried chicken, hot dogs, pulled pork, ribs and even prawns.

The Antelope pub turned fully vegan in 2019 and the arrival of Bite Down truck allows customers to grab drinks and try the tasty food on offer.

Mark Adkins, the owner, said: “When I turned vegan I was looking for replacements of food I liked, and I decided to copy KFC if and tried various different chicken substitutes and had seven mixing bowls going at one time for spices.

“I eventually hit on the spiced chicken recipe and everyone liked it so I thought it would be a good idea to start selling it.

“Anyone who has had any loves it, we’ve had some great reviews.

“There are still a lot of people who won't try vegan food but I think that’s slowly changing as it becomes more and more mainstream.”

Roxi Cox, co-creator of Bite Down, said: “We want to make the closest alternatives to meat and dairy to create fast food that people eat on a night out or when they are treating themselves.

“We don’t pretend it’s really healthy eating or anything like that, it’s a burger still.

“It’s healthier than meat but ultimately the aim is in indulgence, guilt-free fast food that tastes good.

“It gives you the same taste and texture as the meat but it doesn’t come from an animal, it’s better for the planet and more ethical.

“The aim is to charge as little as possible to get meat-eaters to try vegan things more.”

The Bucks Free Press was given a chance to try the range of the food on offer including the vegan burgers, chicken, ribs, pulled pork and even prawns.

All the burgers tasted amazing and would be hard to know they were vegan if you didn’t know before.

The highlights include the ‘BBQ Vegan Pulled Burger’, the ‘Fully Loaded’ burger and the ‘Baycon’ burger.

The ‘Peanut Butter’ burger was also a surprise favourite and if you’re a peanut butter fan, it is definitely one to try.

The vegan fried chicken was packed with flavours with both original and spicy coatings available.

BBQ ribs are on the menu too and you might wonder how you can have vegan ribs but this was proof you can and they tasted great.

The onion rings and prawns were great sides too and whilst we easily cleaned our plates we struggled to come off the topic on how close it compared to the meat alternative.

Another thing to point out is the price of the food, it was all really affordable and came to the table very quickly.

Recently, Bite Down has launched some brand new products including a ‘Spicy Thai Style’ burger and a ‘Hoisin Wrap’.

If they taste as good as the food we sampled then customers are in for a treat.

You can order from Deliveroo and Just Eat or by calling 07540435620. The truck is open from 5pm until 11pm Sunday to Thursday and between 5pm and 12am on Friday and Saturday.
