A Brownie and Guide leader has called for more adult volunteers before a unit has to close down for good.

Juliet Brown, a mother and a Brownie leader pleaded for more volunteers to help run fun activities for girl Guides aged 10 to 14.

No previous Brownie or experience working with young people is required, just “passion for working with young people”, she said.

Juliet said: “These women are leaders of the future.

“Why I absolutely love it is to see the children grow and develop. I take them in as seven-year-olds, and they leave when they’re ten, and you just see them flourish, they try new things and you help them to challenge themselves.

“Through that, the ten-year-olds will lead the seven-year-olds, and no other activity after school does that – to communicate, lead – which are the skills as adults we need.

“It’s a chance to go and be a kid for an hour and a half, and so stuff you normally wouldn’t do.

“When we go zip wiring, I’ll have a go as well as the kids!

“There’s something about being with children that’s freeing for adults.”

As part of her role, Julie also mentors the adult volunteers how to lead and “help them grow into leadership as well.”

Thanks to recent Brownie café in Amersham, they managed to recruit a Guides leader, and now just need a few more over 18s “who will happily come along and help out” at a minimum of 1.5 hours every other week in Amersham.

Julie added: “Traditionally there’s an old image Brownies and Guides just sitting and knitting, whereas actually it’s not like that – it’s all adventures and often doing a whole lot of stuff.”
