BARCLAYS’ announcement to axe one of its branch in Buckinghamshire attracted criticism from local customers and MP.

Barclays bank on Amersham’s Sycamore Road is due to face closure on March 1 2023.

Weeks after the closure revelation, customers continued to worry about the trend of closing banks in Amersham, including HSBC Sycamore Road this August.

When Chesham and Amersham MP Sarah Green told online she had met with Barclays to discuss her concerns over the closure on December 19, residents rushed to share their thoughts.

One Barclays customer said: “I was in there today - and last week as well - it’s a busy branch and I heard a lot of talk from the people in the queue, dismayed at reading the sign announcing the branch closure.”

Another comment said: “I'm an OAP not computer literate, do not have a smart phone, because I'm hard of hearing, so what's the solution, I'm sure I'm not the only one!”

A commentator wrote: “Another bank closure…Only Natwest left in Amersham.”

Ms Green felt “somewhat reassured” after Barclays told her the bank was working to provide assistance to customers after the closure date.

The MP said: “I’m told customers will be sent full info. about the alternatives.

“I share local concern at the loss of yet another bank branch. I will continue to support measures to protect access to in person banking, such as removing the right of single banks to veto the development of Community Banking Hubs.

“We must not lose these vital services.”
