Wycombe Wanderers have confirmed that striker Tjay De Barr has been released from hospital, just hours after collapsing in the club’s 1-0 defeat at Plymouth Argyle.

Seconds after referee Carl Brook brought the fixture against the two sides at Home Park to a close, the 22-year-old forward fell to the ground and was immediately seen by paramedics and both sets of the club’s respective medical staff.

He was treated for about five minutes before being stretched off and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was accompanied by Wanderers manager, Gareth Ainsworth.

Assistant manager Richard Dobson stepped in to cover the media duties and explained that the Gibraltar player ‘is a fighter’, and 'was up talking' following his collapse.

Wycombe then confirmed through their social media pages in the early hours of December 30, that De Barr had undertaken tests and has been discharged, being able to return home to Buckinghamshire.

The club said: “Following a series of tests in hospital, Tjay De Barr has been discharged and is on his way home, accompanied by Manager Gareth Ainsworth and Head of Medical Cian O'Doherty.

“Great news, and keep well Tjay."

De Barr had only been on the pitch for 24 minutes against the Pilgrims on December 29, after he came on as a second-half substitute for Ali Al-Hamadi with the Chairboys 1-0 down.

Within moments of his introduction, he took a blow to the torso in a 50/50 challenge with Argyle’s Danny Mayor and struggled to move fluidly for the rest of the game.

He was also spotted on his haunches for several seconds when Wanderers were on the attack in the final few minutes of the game.

Speaking on the incident, Plymouth boss Steven Schumacher revealed that De Barr ‘might have been coughing up blood’ following the collision with one of his players.

He said: “When I got to him, he [De Barr] was coughing a lot and he was on his side.

“The referee said that he might have been coughing up blood.

“Before the end of the game, it looked like he had run into Danny Mayor so there was a bit of a collision, and he told the referee that he was struggling to breathe.

“The ref kept checking up on him and he [De Barr] said he was OK but at the end, I think it was a bit too much for him.

“The medical team went to him, and I spoke to Gareth [Ainsworth] to see how he was and they reckon he’ll be fine.

“The paramedics checked all of his vitals and his oxygen levels.

“It was quite scary for everyone and we wish him well.”

De Barr has played 13 times for Wycombe since joining from Lincoln Red Imps in August 2021, scoring once.
