New markers have been added to the bollards on Marlow Bridge in an effort by Buckinghamshire Council to address issues caused by HGVs getting stuck while driving into the town.

Flexible alignment markers are currently being installed on Marlow Bridge by Buckinghamshire Council to help motorists align and navigate their vehicles through the width restriction.

It comes after the bridge was blocked by a motorhome in January, which stopped traffic overnight when it became stuck between the bridge’s bollards.

The bollards were installed to discourage large vehicles from crossing the bridge, which is a Grade I listed infrastructure.

The motorhome incident was one of many over the past few years caused by overweight vehicles attempting to cross Marlow Bridge.

In 2016, the bridge was forced to close after a 37-tonne lorry became stuck and burst a tyre, causing "overstress on the bridge's key structural parts".

While the bollards have been in place for over 20 years, Buckinghamshire Council faced backlash from the local community after reducing the distance between them in 2021.

Bucks council also installed a camera on the bridge in the same year to monitor the number of travelers in heavy cars, vans or lorries attempting to cross.

It found that, on average, 97 vehicles were breaching the size restrictions each day.

The council later had to take the camera down due to restrictions on the enforcement of structural weight limits by local authorities.

The weight limit for vehicles crossing Marlow Bridge is currently 3 tonnes and anyone crossing in a vehicle over that weight faces a fine by the Thames Valley Police.

Vehicles likely to be over this limit include motorhomes as well as large vans and 4x4s.

A representative from Buckinghamshire Council said the installation of flexible alignment markers on top of the bollards at Marlow Bridge should be completed by the end of the month.
