A pub landlord reopening a closed pub has thanked his predecessor for making the pub 'amazing'.
The Griffin pub in Chesham was closed for months after its long-term landlord Pat Miller and her husband Steve stepped down after 24 years.
For a while, it seemed the popular pub which often helped the elderly residents would remain shut, until the owner Star Pubs and Bars announced a new operator was going to continue The Griffin’s journey, with doors opening again on Monday, December 11.
The pub’s new landlord Jim Dyer told what inspired him to step up to rescue the pub.
On the day of the grand opening, the Chesham local Jim said he was feeling “excited” but also “nervous.”
He said: “I was given the opportunity to get The Griffin up and running again. It would be a shame to see another pub close for good, so I want to give it a go and bring back some community spirit.

“I’m feeling excited as well as nervous. Even though I’ve been in the trade for a good 10 years, it’s always a challenge opening up a new pub. I hope to bring people together and enjoy the experience.”
Jim was already familiar with Star Pubs and Bars, who are associated with The George and Dragon in Chesham Jim also runs. Prior to this the experienced landlord was at the helm of The Nash Arms.
He said the best thing about Chesham is “its community”.
“I want to open another local pub for local people, but also welcome those who are new. Pubs are a great way to meet new people. With people constantly moving into the area, it’s a great way for everyone to get to know each other and catch up with those they haven’t seen in a while,” he explained.
Sadly, many pubs have been forced out of business in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic and rising costs.
“I think pubs need local support more now than ever.
“Many pubs throughout the country are closing due to running costs, energy costs etc. It would be great to visit pubs as often as possible, even for a soft drink, to keep the community together,” Jim said.
The interior of the newly opened Griffin has been “slightly” changed, but otherwise beer on draught will remain what “people enjoy and are popular within Chesham.”
Jim thanked everyone involved in the reopening, the customers and former landlady Pat and Steve for “all their hard work over the years.”
“They brought an amazing atmosphere and community into The Griffin, so I hope we can keep that going for them, and for every pub in Chesham,” he added.
