Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth has praised his side’s performance against Burton Albion on Saturday, but admitted that for some parts of the first half, his team ‘were sluggish’.

Goals from David Wheeler and skipper Matt Bloomfield saw the Chairboys secure a 2-0 win over Nigel Clough’s men, which also saw the club achieve their sixth consecutive league clean sheet.

The result means that Wycombe will remain on top of League One, seven points clear of second-placed Ipswich.

Speaking after the game, Ainsworth said: “We had a strategy to sort of force Burton long in the first half, and I thought it worked quite well.

“But they got hold of the ball for a bit which caused us a few problems as we looked a bit sluggish, so we had words at half-time to put that right.

“Burton changed in the second half, as they couldn’t adapt to the change of our tactics and I thought we saw the game out well.”

The result means Wycombe go into their derby match against Oxford on December 21 seven points clear of second-placed Ipswich Town, who they play on New Year's Day.

Additionally, yesterday’s game against Burton was Wycombe’s first match since they played Ipswich on November 26, when they drew 0-0 at Portman Road.

Ainsworth added: “We scored two great goals.

“It was good to see David Wheeler get on the scoresheet and Matt Bloomfield, what can we say, captain, leader, and he’ll go down in history at this place because he’s such a player, but everyone played really well.

“This was a real team performance and we’ve not conceded again which is a real feather in our caps.”
