David Wheeler has revealed that despite Wycombe’s lofty position in the table, the team and squad are not getting ahead of themselves.

The 29-year-old, who joined from QPR this summer, scored the first against Burton on Saturday, as the Chairboys defeated the Brewers 2-0 at Adams Park.

The result means Wycombe are unbeaten in 12 league matches, have kept six consecutive league clean sheets and remain on top of League One.

Speaking after the Burton game, Wheeler said: “Each time we beat a team, we often hear comments like we’re being criticised for the way that we play, or the ref hasn’t been on it, but you don’t get into the position that we are in without merit.

“I think its good motivation for us as people don’t show us that respect and it takes a bit of pressure off."

Over the Christmas period, Wycombe have got away games to Oxford on December 21 and Portsmouth on Boxing Day, before having home matches against Coventry on December 29 and Ipswich on New Year’s Day.

“There’s no point talking about promotion.

“There’s been a countless number of seasons in my career where people say, ‘we’ll aim for the playoffs, we’ll aim for the playoffs,’ and I’m thinking, ‘we’re 46 games away from that – there’s no point’.

“Of course, everyone wants to win the league but there’s no point looking that far ahead and I think that’s one thing we’ve managed to do well this season.

“We’ve got some tough games and we’ll take each game as it comes.”
