Wycombe striker Adebayo Akinfenwa has teased fans at the prospect of signing a former Premier League striker.

The 37-year-old, who joined the club in July 2016, uploaded a video on Twitter and said: "Breaking news, breaking news, breaking news, we’ve just found out that Wycombe Wanderers have signed a new striker.

“I’m going to divulge the information right now – how happy are you?”

He then turned his phone to reveal former Ipswich, Charlton, Tottenham, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Fulham forward, Darren Bent.

Bent, who also played for Derby, Brighton and Burton, as well as representing England on 13 occasions, scoring four times, said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Wycombe.

Akinfenwa's reaction on Twitter

“They’re a great club, they’ve got a great squad, I know some of the players really well, so I can’t wait to get going."

And after Bayo asked what he thinks Bent could bring to the team, the 35-year-old said: “Lots of goals and bit of experience.”

After the video went viral, many fans shared their excitement but were very wary of the news, with supporter saying: ‘All the best Benty’ before another added: 'Why haven’t the club announced this? If it’s a joke it’s cruel...’

And like most fans suspected, it turned out to be a prank, as the fan favourite shared the tweet with numerous laughing emojis.

Wycombe is currently top of League One and play Oxford on Saturday at the Kassam Stadium.
