Wycombe Wanderers remain in the League One automatic promotion spots as they defeated a poor Doncaster Rovers side 2-0 at the Keepmoat Stadium.

First-half headers from Anthony Stewart and Adebayo Akinfenwa sealed the win for the South Bucks boys in a match that saw them dominate from the start.

For the third league fixture in a row involving the Chairboys, a goal was scored inside the first five minutes of the contest.

After Wycombe countered attacked in the first 90 seconds, Brandon Hanlan found Curtis Thompson, who laid it off to the overlapping Jason McCarthy.

McCarthy’s cross was blocked for a corner, and from the resulting set-piece, Wanderers went 1-0 up, as Joe Jacobson’s dangerous delivery was headed in by Anthony Stewart from close range.

It was a perfect start for Wycombe, who have only won twice away from home all season.

Eight minutes later, and Gareth Ainsworth’s men nearly doubled their lead.

Garath McCleary, who is in the form of his career right now, whipped in a cross from the left-hand side but McCarthy’s glancing header went inches wide.

Wycombe were showing no mercy.

It was attack after attack and just after 17 minutes, the visitors got their second of the contest.

Again from the left-hand side, McCleary delivered another teasing ball into the box, but this time, his assist was finished with a goal, as Akinfenwa looped his header from eight-yards over the hapless Pontus Dahlberg.

Wycombe were cruising.

Doncaster’s best form of defence was by attacking, and they did have several efforts to get back into the game.

Jordy Hiwula fired wide from range, David Stockdale easily gathered Rodrigo Vilca’s shot and Hiwula crashed the corner of post and bar midway through the contest.

Tiago Cukur then forced Stockdale into a save in the final moments of the first-half, but  Wycombe were in complete control as they went into the break 2-0 up.

The second half was a very quiet affair as Wanderers didn’t penetrate the Donny backline, as they did in the first-half.

Instead, Ainsworth’s men sat back and allowed the Yorkshire side to have plenty of the ball, but they didn’t really create anything that caused much concern.

Ben Close and Ethan Galbraith both tested Stockdale, with the latter being a thunderous effort from 25-yards, but in truth, Wanderers were always comfortable.

McCleary nearly added a third but his drive was saved by Dahlberg, before Jordan Obita fired wide in the closing stages.

But 2-0 it stayed as Wanderers remain in the promotion places.

The win was their first away at Doncaster since March 1994, whilst also registering their third victory on the road in the league this season.

Up next for Wanderers is another trip to Yorkshire as they face Rotherham United on Tuesday night, before they play Crewe Alexandra at Adams Park next weekend.
