Gareth Ainsworth has revealed his happiness after Dominic Gape played his first league match of the season against Doncaster Rovers.

The former Southampton man came on as a second-half substitute and nearly scored a header in Wycombe’s victory over the Yorkshire side – their first away at Doncaster since 1994.

Gape has struggled with injuries since Wycombe’s promotion last season, but with games coming in thick and fast, Ainsworth hopes he’ll get more minutes under his belt as rotations will more than likely take place.

The Wycombe boss said: “It’s brilliant for him.

“It’s been stop start for him over the last year or so, and I really felt him last season, as he wasn’t able to play that many minutes in Championship because it’s all we have ever dreamed of doing, so getting him back there is a great achievement.

“Not for him, but himself as he is Wycombe through and through.

“He knows how important it is and he knows how special what he has got here, and he almost scored near the end with a header which would have been amazing.

“But it’s brilliant to have him back.

“This squad is really depth and I’m pleased with that.”
