A leading business figure in the Chilterns has backed a popular supermarket to return to its former home, just two months after it left.

Iceland's Amersham store at 75 Sycamore Road closed on December 31 2015 despite high-profile figures in the area – including the Chair of the Chiltern Chamber of Commerce, Vee Bharakda - signing a petition against the move.

Iceland confirmed it has since submitted an offer to developers Angle Property to reoccupy their former site, stating they were “keen” to return, and now the chair has thrown her weight behind their campaign to move back to the town.

Ms Bharakda said: “With Iceland being taken away Amersham is definitely going to lose a lot of trade.

“I think the town needs an affordable supermarket. I would support Iceland’s return, and if not then certainly another shop like it.

“There is a vast amount of the population that use these types of shops and it’s devastating for some of them to lose that.

“Not everybody can afford to go to M&S and Waitrose. With Iceland no longer being there it makes it terribly difficult for the elderly who have relied on that shop for years and years.”

Angle Property confirmed earlier this month that it was "in talks" with Iceland, as well as other retailers including The Co-op and Morrisons, over the vacant site.

Plans for the redevelopment of the site - which includes two other retail outlets (Cargo and Chilton Watson Opticians) - would see the existing building replaced with two retail/restaurant units, and as many as 35 new flats above.

The proposal by was received by Chiltern District Council on December 22.
