THE play transports us back to a post-World War II age of trilbies and chic dresses, Habitat-style decor and dial-up telephones (surely they were black – this was blood red). Stage and film action was often slower and less frenetic, but the build-up of atmosphere and tension could be masterful.

THOSE expecting the horror or tension of contemporary ghost stories may be disappointed by Classic Ghosts, as it didn’t quite achieve the modern scare-factor, but for those gripped by classical storytelling this adaptation may be of interest.

I EXPECTED big things for The Two Worlds of Charlie F. With the poignant story of servicemen and women injured while serving in the forces brought to the stage, I expected to be reaching for my tissues. But I didn't, as somehow the show lacked that certain something.

SHIRLEY Koster directed this Agatha Christie-type whodunit thriller with fun, twists and laughs. Mercifully, Koster stopped short of an all-out farce, but could not help dipping her toe in a bit of pratfalling.
