A globe-trotting marathon runner from Amersham has announced he is competing in this year’s London event to raise money for two well-known disability charities.

Tom Dixon, 36, who competed in his first London Marathon in at the age of just 20, will be raising money for Mobility Choice and Scope.

As well as couple of ‘Ultra Marathons’ (over 50km), Mr Dixon has completed regular marathons in Dublin, Edinburgh and New York and claims his aunt was the inspiration for his fundraising.

“Before she retired, my aunt was a tireless disability campaigner,” he said.

“At the age of 33, she had a stroke which left her with impaired movement down her right side.

“She has been an inspiration to me in many ways and I wanted to work with like-minded people.”

Mobility Choice focuses on advancing independent mobility for people with disabilities and older people while Scope looks to drive change across society so that disabled people have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Mr Dixon added: “I have been raising funds for Scope since joining the charity. It’s an incredible cause – changing society’s attitudes towards disabled people makes a huge difference.”

The 36-year-old is aiming for a personal best time of just under three hours at the 2016 London Marathon, which takes place on April 24.
