Controversial plans to demolish buildings and replace them with offices and houses in Beaconsfield have resurfaced, five months after a similar application was refused.

The existing workshops and garages at the rear of 36 to 56 London End will be torn down and replaced with a terrace of four houses and an office building if the application, submitted by Burnham Nominees Ltd, is given permission.

A similar plan submitted in December last year was refused by South Bucks District Council in May because of concerns over access to the site and pedestrian safety.

In January, angry residents and patients at Millbarn Medical Centre protested against the plans, claiming the development would add more strain on the already limited parking space.

However Burnham Nominees Ltd, who say their latest application is ‘virtually identical’ to last year’s, claims the issues raised last time have been resolved.

While the access road to the site is not wide enough for two-way traffic, they have attempted to alleviate the situation by proposing to create a one-way system.

In the design and applications statement, they said: “Currently there are no controls in place to prevent vehicles attempting to enter and exit the site from meeting head-to-head.

“This arrangement has the potential to be very dangerous, particularly when vehicles reverse across the pedestrian pavement and back into London End to give way. This risk is magnified by the poor visibility available for reversing at these points.

“In order to eliminate these highway hazards the proposed scheme incorporates a one way system.”

Beaconsfield Old Town Residents Association (BOTRA) called the plan ‘inappropriate’ and argue it should be refused on the grounds of ‘over commercialisation of a conservation area’ as well as increased traffic and noise pollution.
