A Beaconsfield resident celebrated her 100th birthday with help from children from a nearby nursery school last week.

Kay Crichton, who lives at Harrias House residential care home in Hedgerley Lane, marked the milestone birthday with a party on Friday, April 15 – the day before her actual birthday.

Mrs Crichton was born in 1916, the year that saw the introduction of Daylight Savings Time, David Lloyd George become Prime Minister of the UK and the Easter Rising in Ireland. She was also born in the midst of World War One which saw a number of bombing raids on the country.

She was also ten years old when the future Queen of England, Elizabeth II, was born on April 21.

At the celebration on Saturday, the centenarian, who is a fan of astronaut Tim Peake, was serenaded by children from Poppies Day Nursery and town mayor, John Read, also joined the party.

Eli Nsemwa, manager at Harrias House, said Mrs Crichton had a “lovely” birthday with friends and family.

She said: “It was a really wonderful day and she really enjoyed herself with her daughter, her best friend Iris and her friends and neighbours. We had birthday cake and champagne and the children sang happy birthday to her. It was a lovely day.”
