Villagers are aiming to make the 2015 Gerrards Cross Christmas light show bigger, better and brighter than ever this year as they say residents and businesses “deserve better”.

The parish council has agreed to support the aims of the Gerrards Cross Traders Association to better the recent displays, which they described as “poor”.

During a meeting last week, the council agreed to give £7,000 to the group as they aim to raise £15,000 each year for the purchase, maintenance and storage of the lights.

Polly Lusher of the traders association, said: “We want to give the village a real festive feel this Christmas time. We were very impressed with some of the other displays last December and wanted to try and get something similar for Gerrards Cross.

“We looked back after December and I think most agreed the lights were looking very tired, with some not even working and in fact too dangerous to use again.

“We have bought the lights permanently in the past but with storage costs, and the cost of putting them up, not to mention the fact they need replacing after about four or five years, we think a lease deal would be much better for the town.”

They asked the council for a contribution of £7,000 to kick-start the 2015 bid and despite a couple of objections they agreed to donate the cash for the first year.

Council chairman Chris Brown said: “I’m very supportive of something like this, it’s something which I would say definitely needs to be looked at.

“In the last few years our lights have been a bit of a poor show and this village deserves better.”

Last year the neighbouring town of Beaconsfield purchased new Christmas lights with great acclaim and it is hoped now they have received the money from the parish council, Gerrards Cross can achieve similar success.

As well as proving nicer for residents, it is also hoped that more shoppers will be attracted into the village around the Christmas period.

Although details have not been finalised it is thought the traders association would like to agree to a three or five-year scheme worth £15,000 every year.

What do you think about the plans to spend thousands of pounds every year on new Christmas lights in the town?
