Students from Bucks New University have been working with Wycombe Wanderers FC to help widen the club’s online presence as part of their degree.

Around 20 second-year Sport Business Management students at Bucks Business School, part of the university, were tasked with creating a digital marketing plan for the club with the aim of growing its fan base both on social media and on match days at home.

The Wanderers’ head of media, Matt Cecil, gave a presentation to the students which detailed the club’s recent history and current objectives. They then came up with ideas that included the creation of a Wycombe Wanderers account on Snapchat and an online treasure hunt.

The final projects were presented to club staff at Adams Park last week and Mr Cecil said he was “impressed” with the calibre and “variety of ideas” on show.

He said: “It’s been a great project for us to be involved with and there are a number of ideas which we are keen to implement as a result.

“For the students to see their work being used by a professional football club should be a testament to the work they’ve put in and hopefully it’s a useful step in their path towards having a successful career in sports management.

“There’s even the opportunity for some of the students to come along on match days next season and help put their ideas into practice, working alongside us to push out new content to the supporters.”

Greta Paa-Kerner, senior lecturer at Bucks Business School, said: “This is an example of how Bucks Business School engages with the community to benefit both businesses and our students.

“These real-life projects help to develop key skills to enhance employability and this makes for a winning team for our students studying Sport Business Management and for Wycombe Wanderers benefiting from their digital marketing insights."
