A major EU referendum debate in High Wycombe yesterday, which was cancelled in wake of the horrifying murder of MP Jo Cox, will not be rescheduled for Monday as previously expected.

The debate at All Saints Church, in Castle Street, was set to be one of the last held in town ahead of Thursday's landmark referendum with speakers Baroness Sharon Bowles and Wycombe Labour member Linda Derrick putting the case forward for remain, and Wycombe MP Steve Baker and Luton North Labour MP Kelvin Hopkins for Brexit.

Rev Hugh Ellis, who organised the debate, said yesterday it was possible it could be moved to Monday (June 20).

He confirmed in an email to attendees today this will now "not be possible" and apologised to those who had registered for tickets.

Politicians across Buckinghamshire paid tribute to the murdered Labour MP and mother-of-two who died after being shot and stabbed in the street outside her constituency advice surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Mr Baker said: “Campaigning in the EU referendum by all sides has ceased in memorial today and it remains to be decided when campaigning will resume.”

A Message from The Rev'd Hugh Ellis:

As you know, out of respect for Jo Cox MP who was tragically murdered on Thursday, the Remain Leave event has been cancelled.

Unfortunately, it is not going to be possible to hold this event on Monday as was hoped. We do apologies to all those who were looking forward to the event at All saints.

Our thoughts and prayers continue to go to Jo Cox's family at this time.

My prayers for High Wycombe especially and for us all as we discern how rightly to vote.

Hugh Ellis
