An emotional vigil was held in High Wycombe last night as the town paid tribute to the 84 innocent men, women and children who were brutally killed in the horrific Nice terror attack last week.

Standing together, town dignitaries joined religious figures and members of the public to remember those who lost their lives on Thursday.

The appalling atrocity rocked the world, with Wycombe District Council chairman, cllr Mahboob Hussain, last night calling on people from the district to pause and remember the victims.

It was sadly just the latest in a series of vigils to be held in the town and came hours after councillors held a minute silence for murdered MP Jo Cox – as they returned for their first full meeting since her death.

Speaking at last night’s vigil, cllr Hussain said: “How sad is it that we are holding another one of these vigils?

"This evening we share in the grief and sorrow of the French people. While we grieve for those who died and suffered in Nice, we can honour them by upholding our values of love and friendship.

“We can also redouble our efforts against extremism and terrorism.

“This evening we stand together, united against those who seek to strike fear in our hearts and divide our community.

“And we hold in our thoughts those who have been and continue to be the victims of violent terrorist acts in countries all around the world.”

Following cllr Hussain’s speech, Rev Hugh Ellis and Imam Ghulam Jeelani were invited to lead the group in prayer.
