A retiring head teacher will wave goodbye to John Hampden Grammar School next week after students achieved the school’s best ever A-Level results.

Describing the results day as the teenager’s “Olympics”, Stephen Nokes celebrated as 80 per cent of students finished with grades of A* - B and 47 per cent achieved A* or A.

Mr Nokes has been in charge of the High Wycombe school for 16 years, but will step down next week after seeing his students smash the school’s previous best A-Level grades.

He said: “It’s really exciting to finish on a high and the amazing thing is that every year results have gone up and this year is another record year.

"Almost 80 per cent A* to B and 50 per cent A*/A, which is exceptional. We’re so delighted for the boys.

“There’s lots of happy faces and a great conclusion for them. It’s their Olympics.

“They’ve done really well and hopefully it will allow them to go onto do what they want to do.”

Many of the students achieved beyond what they were expecting, with Will Eaton hailing the school for helping his get 4 A*s.

He has now been accepted to study in Oxford and will start his earth sciences course from September.

There were also celebrations from friends Rob Walker (four A*s) and Alex Dalton (two A*s and two As) who will now study at Cambridge and Manchester respectively.

Mr Nokes will leave the school next week after receiving this year’s GCSE results.

He said: “I’ve quite enjoyed the summer, but I will probably go on to do some education consultancy.

“But hopefully it’s time to chill out and have a good rest.

“I’ve been here 16 years and it’s been extremely enjoyable, it’s a great school, great environment and I will miss it immensely.”
