A “dangerous” mini roundabout on a busy road that residents campaigned to make safer will finally be repositioned in a bit to prevent accidents.

The roundabout, on Hatters Lane, will be re-aligned to slow traffic down, with a number of other safety measures for pedestrians created - costing £100,000.

According to residents who live on the road, the roundabout is too close to the junction of Hicks Farm Rise, and motorists often drive over the roundabout, rather than around it, in the direction of High Wycombe.

A petition set up by concerned resident Dannii Laine in 2015, which gathered more than 370 supporters, called for the roundabout to be re-positioned or a traffic light junction to be installed to better manage the flow of traffic on the road.

The campaigner said that “numerous” crashes had happened at the junction, which has no crossings to help people cross the road.

He said: “The roundabout itself is in a poor condition: the cobbles it's made of are falling out due to the amount of lorries that have to go over it, not to mention that it isn't actually in the centre of the junction but in the middle of a lane of traffic meaning at busy times it can be awkward to manoeuvre around.”

After years of campaigning, a feasibility study has now been carried out, setting out plans to improve the junction.

Tony Green, chairman of the High Wycombe Town Committee, said work will be funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money.

Addressing a meeting of the Wycombe District Council Cabinet on Monday night, he said: “For those who know Hatters Lane, there is a mini roundabout there that is an absolute nightmare – why it was ever engineered in that way is a mystery, I think, to everyone except the traffic engineers who put it in.

“We are having some money put towards having that re-engineered to hopefully improve it and make it safer.”
