A Croydon builder has been fined for fly-tipping after employing a man to get rid of his trade waste that ended up being dumped illegally in High Wycombe.
Marius Mihaescu, a 45-year-old builder from Shirley Road, pleaded guilty to an offence of failing in his duty of care after rubbish was found illegally dumped at Handy Cross in April this year.
Mr Mihaescu appeared at Wycombe Magistrates' on September 13 and was fined £305, ordered to pay full costs incurred by Bucks County Council of £1,000, a victim surcharge of £30 and £215 compensation to be paid to Wycombe District Council for the clear-up - leaving him with a total bill of £1,550.
In court Mr Mihaescu admitted that he had employed the services of someone he knew only as Michael to remove and dispose of waste that he had generated at a site he was working at in South London.
He admitted that he did not check if Michael was registered with the Environment Agency authorising him to carry the waste and that no paperwork was completed.
When enforcement officers found the rubbish dumped at Handy Cross, there was evidence linking some of the waste to Mr Mihaescu.
WDC cabinet member for environment Julia Adey, speaking on behalf of the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire, said: “This is a great example of the diligence of our officers in tracing the source of illegal waste and following through to a conviction - and it's a stark reminder to tradespeople to ensure that trade waste is disposed of properly - an unidentified 'man with a van' is not sufficient”.
