A petition to crack down on bad parking outside a High Wycombe school has been launched as fed up parents say “enough is enough” – amid fears for their children’s safety.

More than 120 people have so far supported a petition calling for bollards to be installed outside both Hamilton Academy sites in Priory Road and Hampden Road and in Priory Avenue, as the school tries to battle against parents parking on pavements or blocking the road.

Reyes Nuno, who lives on Hampden Road and has three children at the school, is part of Friends of Hamilton, the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) which has launched the petition.

She said the parking situation at school pick up and drop off times is “terrible” and said her own children were involved in a near-miss.

She said: “Hampden Road narrows down towards the school and cars park on the yellow zigzag lines and block access to emergency vehicles. So far, we haven’t had a situation like that but it has been getting worse – this has been going on for years and it’s an accident waiting to happen.

“When I was picking up one of my children from school, my twins were walking on the pavement when a car pulled up on the pavement in front of them. The car started to reverse backwards towards them – my heart skipped a beat.

“You have to expect an increase in cars around the school at those times, but it is a seriously bad situation. There is really dangerous parking.”

Attempts by the school to bring the situation under control have not been successful – with parents who have been caught parking on the pavements hurling abuse at those who have told them to move.

Mrs Nuno said the school and the PTA have decided “enough is enough” and are now urging those who are concerned by the “dangerous” parking situation to sign a petition.

She added: “We have tried so many things in the last few years to try and sort the problem – we bought cones and signs, we have spoken to drivers who are actually parking on the pavements and we have had abuse from them.

“We have reported cars who have parked on the pavement to police, we have had traffic wardens down here, but nothing improves the problem.

“Enough is enough. We are collecting signatures to present a petition to the council. We have tried all the reasonable ways with parents. I'm not just being a moany resident, it really is a dangerous situation.”
