Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth has revealed how ‘delighted’ he was after Wycombe’s 3-0 win over Barnsley on August 20.

Three incredible strikes from Anis Mehmeti, Dom Gape Nick Freeman ended a poor run of three league games without a win, at a ground they had never been victorious at.

The victory was Wanderers’ inaugural at Oakwell, which also ended the Tykes’ amazing 31-game unbeaten run record in League One, which began in April 2016.

Speaking on the victory in South Yorkshire, Ainsworth said: “I am absolutely delighted.

“I’m delighted for the fans who made the trip as they did not stop singing, they out sang those in Oakwell so thank you so much for that, thank you to the players because they have been through the mill so far this season.

“We’ve had a number of injuries and it’s been tough.

“No Sam Vokes, Ryan Tafazolli, Brandon Hanlan, D’Mani Mellor picked up a knock on Tuesday, Sullay Kaikai became a father during the week but he is still injured, so we are still short of numbers.

“But we made a point after the Exeter game to go back our basics to what we are, how well we can do things and use my style and philosophy.

“I got them doing set pieces for an hour on Thursday as I have not been happy with them at all and they knew that, and I don’t think they will want to have another Thursday afternoon like that again.

“But they have blown me away with the performance, with the defending, the blocks, the stats, and the headers.

“And I just wanted to say thank you to the Couhigs, as I have had texts and emails from them throughout this little run, backing me and understanding me due to the injuries, and where the club is.

“They have given me nothing but support.”

The win has moved Wycombe up from 20th to 14th.
