I AM not quite sure what possessed me to go and see Derren Brown perform his Svengali show as all I could expect was the unexpected and my understanding was that this is a man who can truly produce the extraordinary.

This being said I have always been quite sceptical about this sort of act and therefore of Derren Brown himself. However, having now seen the show I am under no illusions that this is a performer of significant talent and also surprisingly witty.

No show I have ever seen before can really be compared to that of Svengali. I wish I could delve into the mesmerising tricks the audience are both presented and involved in yet I, like the rest of the sell out audience in the theatre are under oath from Derren Brown himself not to divulge the content of his performance. From what I witnessed this is not a man whose trust I would betray. He is mysterious and immensely passionate about what he does.

The show started with acts that tempt you to try and work out ‘How does he do that?’ but these become increasingly confusing and his warning on announcing the interval is that those of a nervous/ squeamish disposition may not want to return for the second half. Whether it’s the anticipation that builds minute on minute or simply another mind trick from Derren I can assure you that you will want to return whether you are anxious or not on what to expect.

It doesn’t disappoint. The final half of Derren’s show is awe inspiringly well crafted and will leave you so confused that I do not doubt that like myself you will be up long in the night simply thinking ’How?’ And as for the meaning of Svengali, well buy yourself a ticket and you just might just find out first hand.

Svengali is at the Aylesbury Waterside Theatre until June 2 at 7.30pm each night. Tickets are £35. Call 08448717607 or go to www.atgtickets.com/aylesbury.
