On the radar

The Misbourne Symphony Orchestra
The Misbourne Orchestra’s spring concert starts with Wagner’s sonorous Siegfried’s Funeral March, followed by Aaron Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait. After the interval Richard Jacklin conducts the orchestra in Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.  The first movement, based on a folk tune, officially celebrates Slavic culture in a march, but has emotional shadings which symbolize the composer’s mental struggle.  The second movement reverts to Shostakovich’s previous sense of fun, typical of his film music, and with a Viennese lilt.  But the third movement is a requiem to all the family members (mostly on his wife’s side) who were killed by Stalin, with references to Russian liturgies, and with a full force screaming lament.  The last movement is a faux happy ending, with Shostakovich making great efforts to be cheerful, only to return to the minor key at the end. Tickets are available by phoning 01494 784479; or from Perfect Pitch, Chesham; or from The Record Shop, Woodside Rd, Amersham; or at the door of Amersham School.  They are £12 for adults, concessions £10 and £5 for children.
