National commemoration of First World War
St Giles Church, Stoke Poges, whose churchyard contains the graves of some of those who fought and subsequently died in the war, will be a focus for the surrounding villages when it joins in with cathedrals and churches throughout Britain on the night of 4 August to mark the start of a period of four years of commemoration. The candlelit service was conceived from the famous words of Sir Edward Grey, Foreign Secretary at the time - "The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our time". It will include special anthems, readings from the letters of soldiers who fought at the time and will pray for reconciliation and an end to violence and conflict in the world today. This will be an opportunity to recognise all the Commonwealth soldiers who stood by Britain at that time, to reflect on a period in our history which led to tremendous sacrifice and bravery on the battlefield and quiet heroism on the home front. The war changed the world and shaped the country we live in today.  Bells calling people to church will be muffled and Royal British Legion storm candles will be placed on the relevant graves.
