Family History Talk: The Buckinghamshire County Museum
If you did your research when the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies first opened, and before that used the Local Studies section of Aylesbury Reference Library, you will remember senior librarian Bill Torrens. If you needed help, Bill was the person to go to, and he did a lot of work to make the resources more easily available. Sadly, Bill died far too young, and in recognition of the help he had given to the society, it was decided to hold an annual talk in his memory. Will Phillips works at the Buckinghamshire County Museum, and will talk about the artefacts and archives that it holds, both in the main Aylesbury building and at the off-site store at Halton. He will show how the museum’s collections reflect the social history of the county. Free; non-members of Buckinghamshire Family History Society are very welcome; a small donation will be appreciated. Revellers Afternoon Stroll
Have some time on your hands this afternoon, why not work off that lunch with a pleasant walk, get some fresh air, and just mingle with a great crowd while having a leisurely walk. Bisham Woods is an extensive ancient woodland said to be one of the UK's most colourful ancient woodland sites, dominated by beech, but with a mix of other broadleaf species and some conifer. It sits on the scarp slope rising from the flood plain of the River Thames in the Royal Borough of Windsor, with spectacular views across the Chiltern Hills. The woods are believed to be at least 500 years old, but may once have formed part of Britain’s original wild wood. Until the 13th century they belonged to the Bisham Estate which was owned by the powerful Knights Templars of Bisham Abbey. Many of the archaeological features on the site are evidence of its past, including the ice house constructed in the 1760s. Tickets: £5 annual membership.

Such a popular event has the race become that it continues to be held annually, with the money raised continuing to be used to develop sporting facilities in the park and locally. There is also a 3k fun-run for those who prefer shorter distances, and sprint races for children - all part of making the event a real family occasion. As ever, there will be a barbecue to feed hungry racers, as well as nourishing all those who come to support. Anyone interested in entering can do so from the race website, www.wooburnpark10k.com - or alternatively, entries can be made on the day. Even if you don't want to run, all are welcome to come and support the runners - or even just to have a coffee in the new pavilion, which was why the race began in the first place.
