Family History Talk: The Domesday Survey
The 20 years following the Norman conquest saw an expensive series of internal rebellions and attempts at invasion from the Continent. When William I called his Council to devise plans for the defence of his shore, he was appalled to learn that that the country’s reserve coffers were almost empty. He proposed an assessment of the lands held by his subjects so that a taxation scheme could be launched to provide funding for a permanent military force. The final draft became known as Domesday Book, a survey of lands and other assets. Tom Doig explains. Free; non-members of Buckinghamshire Family History Society are very welcome; a small donation will be appreciated.
