AN AWARD winning singer who has performed at Glastonbury Festival will take the stage at a new music club on Tuesday.

Megan Henwood, from Henley, will sing at the Life of Riley, recently set up at the chapel in Sir William Borlase's Grammar School in Marlow.

Henwood is a previous winner of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award and has sung live on the station for Sir Terry Wogan.

The Tuesday night music soiree, in which she will feature, will raise cash for an ongoing appeal to restore the school's chapel spire.

So far £7,000 has been raised towards the goal of £30,000.

To meet its target the school have started a ‘sponsor a shingle’ scheme.

Sponsors will have their names recognised in a time capsule to be placed in the newly repaired spire and found in years to come.

Sue Dexter, spokesman for the school, said: “The shapel spire is in a very sorry state of repair and students will tell you that debris now falls through the roof on a regular basis.

“The chapel is special to many, and the school is very keen to preserve this part of our Marlow heritage.

“The shapel was used as a First and Second World War memorial and the names of the fallen are engraved in the oak panelling in the chancel and nave.”

Other noteworthy aspects of the chapel are a book with all the Borlasians who served in the wars.

The chapel was used as a final resting place for the ashes of one famous Old Borlasian, Ken, ‘Snakehips’ Johnson who died in an air raid during the Blitz when he was performing at the Café de Paris.
