I WENT to see Richard Alston Dance last night, hoping to experience an absorbing performance of world class modern dance that would that linger in the memory.

What a treat; I only wish I could go and see it again in order to take in everything that I missed.

The programme was full of variety of contrasts of mood. It contained everything that is good about the genre, with a reflection of so many different emotions and aspects of human experience.

The stand out dance was the opening work of ‘The Devil in the Detail’, a jazz-era inspired piece, based on the ragtime music of Scott Joplin. It was exuberant and joyful, with a slight element of a 1930s ‘dance off’ as different individuals and groups seemed cheekily to try to outdo each other.

Two performers stood out in particular; Nancy Nerantzi executed every move perfectly and embodied the spirit of carefree abandonment. Nathan Goodman could move from fast, dynamic moves to a slow, controlled style with what seemed like ease. The onstage piano player gave a tremendous performance also.

I also particularly enjoyed ‘Brink’, an older work of Richard Alston’s which has been revived for this show.

If you can possibly get tickets tonight for this amazing show, you will not be disappointed.

Tonight’s show at the Wycombe Swan starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £23.50, £21.50 or £19.50, with concessions £2 off.
