As part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of St Columba’s Church the Chesham Bois Catholic Players staged a lively version of Godspell in the church.

Richard Martin was excellent in the role of Jesus played dressed in white and his adversary Judas was well played by Frans van den Berg dressed in black, both had excellent singing voices.

The cast members who portrayed the philosophers at the start and were then converted to followers of Jesus all gave lively performances with some excellent singing and melodious harmonies. The costumes were bright and zany in red, black and white and ranged from feathers, tutu’s, striped tights and checked trousers to name but a few.

The solemnity of the story was offset by comedy and some clever magic tricks. The offstage choir together with the excellent band added to the overall performance under the musical director Susannah Holroyd.

David J Martin competently directed and superbly choreographed the performance which was lively and uplifting. The next production of the Chesham Bois Catholic Players is The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew on Saturday October 9 at 7.30, Sunday 10 at 4pm Friday 15 at 8pm and Saturday 16 at 7.30.
