A Marlow school’s lunchtime project that supports the children of service personnel has got the seal of approval from the Royal British Legion.

Danesfield Primary School pupils named their project the ‘Poppy Club’ and created their very own sign before welcoming the Bucks Royal British Legion, who provided funding towards the sign, to celebrate.

The Poppy Club allows children of military parents to meet, play and receive support in a “relaxed” environment.

Debbie Brettle, service children’s support coordinator at the school in Henley Road and a Royal British Legion volunteer case worker, said: “The Poppy Club is a great outlet for service children in the school and the children were very excited to name the club and design their own sign.

“We are very pleased to have received the support of the Community Fundraiser, Steve Kingsford, and Chairman of the local Legion branch to enable us to give the club a real identity.”

The RBL will continue to work with the school and within the community to support the Armed Forces community.

Steve Kingsford, community fundraiser, said: “The poppy is a powerful symbol of Remembrance and hope, which is used by the Legion to commemorate the sacrifices of our Armed Forces and to show support to those still serving today, veterans and their loved ones.

“Therefore it seems fitting that the Poppy Club has recognised such a meaning and it encompasses the hope the poppy represents for future generations.

“We look forward to supporting this wonderful project and being involved in its development at the school and within the local community.”

The Poppy Club caters for children aged 4 to 11 years old and meets on a weekly basis at the primary school.
