A PUB in Penn Street has closed to undergo a huge renovation to attract people in the winter months.

The Squirrel closed its doors on October 28 and work is already well under way.

Landlord Steve Macken said: "We are having a complete renovation inside. We are reworking the bar to create different spaces."

At the back of the pub they are going to put in a slate roof with oak decking along with a wood burning stove and comfy sofas, with an extension of the bar.

The idea is that parents can keep an eye on their children in the play area while they stay warm.

He said in the main pub they want to create a "few more nooks" as at the moment it is quite open.

He said: "We want to close off a few of the areas so there is more privacy."

They are revamping the menu and developing the "Stuff in Small Dishes" style menu, which he said will have lots of different flavours, but are not tapas so they can stray from the Spanish flavours.

He said they will continue with a traditional pub menu, where everything is homemade.

They hope to open again on November 26.
