WHEN first reading the subject matter of Sean Hughes’ new comedy stand-up show, it may seem a bit dark, but Sean promises it will be a joyful evening.

Life Becomes Noises was inspired by the death of his father, but the outcome is a surprisingly upbeat show about life in its entirety. “I’ve taken a serious subject and try to make it look a bit lighter,” said Sean.

“It’s all about life and it’s just a show that is very thought provoking, but I never lose sight of the fact that it’s laugh out loud funny as well.”

Sean mixes fancy dress with sing-alongs in the show, as well as having a narrative running through it, making for an eclectic, fun-filled evening.

He said: “My two book ends were my own sense of mentality and obviously I had to make sure the show is uplifting.”

He maintains that his comedic style hasn’t changed for this show, but he added: “Dealing with any subject as severe as death, you have to approach it slightly differently, so I worked on it a lot more than I usually would to make sure I got the tone right.”

And it seems his work has paid off. The show has received great reviews since he first performed at the Edinburgh Festival this summer.

Whilst Sean appreciates the professional accolades, his main concern is that his audience has an enjoyable night, and he is grateful for the public’s feedback.

“It’s lovely when I look at Twitter after a show and there’s always some really beautiful messages left,” he said.

“People tend to thank me for it because it’s more than just a good night out and people tend to get emotionally attached to the show. “

Sean holds the title of the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award, and is still going strong 25 years later.

He was also recently voted No. 40 in Channel 4′s ‘World’s 100 Greatest Comedians’ poll.

“It’s always really nice to be acknowledged, but you don’t really think about comedy for awards.

“It’s all about when you’re out doing a show, but I’m always very happy that [being acknowledged] helps people to come along to the show.”
