A HOAX bomb alert led to a High Wycombe street being cordoned off by police earlier today.

Desborough Avenue was shut in both directions for several hours after officers received reports of a suspicious package being found.

An investigation showed the package was harmless, but it caused disruption to residents and motorists who had to avoid the area.

Area Commander Supt Gilbert Houalla said: "I can confirm that officers from Thames Valley Police were called to Desborough Avenue at around 9.47am this morning following a report of a suspicious package and I would like to offer the reassurance that the situation is under control and there is no need to feel alarmed.

"The police attended and a cordon was put in place while experts examined the package and made sure that the area was safe was residents.

"Although we are in the early stages of our investigation, we are satisfied that this package is innocuous and that it is a hoax but we will be continuing to follow up enquiries as to why and how it came to be in Desborough Avenue."

The section of road between Kitchener Road and Deeds Grove was cordoned off by officers investigating the contents of the package.
