Too many managers and not enough common sense.

There is not enough money to fix the NHS. Over many different Governments the department is hardly fit for purpose.

The Dr’s and the Nurses and the support staff all do a brilliant top class job – I would even go so far as to say some managers do a great job as well.

The problem is the political masters always tinkering around the edges and constantly changing things, giving new targets to make them look as if the whole department is successful and working when it’s not.

I will always have this vision in my head of Tony Blair using some statistic about waiting times being down under New Labour, blah, blah, blah…blah… standing in PMQ’s in the Chamber with his glasses on holding onto a red book with different coloured tabs on to show the answers to the questions that he already know are coming..

Then fast forward to another PM in the same situation saying blah, blah, blah waiting times are down, blah, blaaddie blaaa….!

Each time a new Government comes into power the Health Minister looks to stamp his or her authority on the department and around everyone goes again..

Then to top it all off – New Labour leave the Country broke and decide to made super hospitals one in each County for us all to go to if one of our legs fall off, etc “Acute Care Hospitals”.

So the old days of rushing to your local hospital in the middle of the night got replaced with you going to one hospital to then be told that you must go to another many miles away, where you sit holding onto your leg which fell off for 8 hours and then give up and hop off to fix it yourself.

Well here’s my alternative answer.

Make hospitals run by business and not government. Make them centres of excellent and sell the secrets to hospitals around the world as a blueprint.

Also get funding from rich billionaires that want to help (or that want to have tax breaks) – either way it doesn’t matter – we need their money which is only sitting in off shore bank accounts being hidden by HMRC somewhere in Switzerland or the Bahamas.

We have our fair share of multi millionaires and billionaires in the UK.

In the Victorian days they all went around building grand hospitals, theatres, parks, etc Why not go back to philanthropist?

Look at the wonderful work that Bill Gates is achieving with Polo, etc Warren Buffett is giving billions away to charities rather than try and take a big wade of cash to his grave or to leave to his offspring.

Off course we need to get organised, we need to march and protest – in the past I’ve gone on two hospital marches – where has that got us? The money isn’t there to return back the lost A&E services that were a mistake in the first place to take away… But let’s fight to look elsewhere, let’s get organised – let’s do something!
