BOURNE End is set to benefit from long-awaited road improvements over the next financial year, Bucks County Council has confirmed.

Mike Appleyard, deputy leader at BCC, said major re-surfacing work will take place on Cores End Road in the next 12 months.

He was responding to comments made at the Wooburn and Bourne End Annual Parish Meeting last week, where one angry resident labelled the roads in the area "like a third world country".

And Cllr Appleyard admitted poor funding for roads over the past decade have led to surfacing problems and potholes occurring at rate the council cannot keep up with.

He said: "Our roads have been poorly maintained for a long time, with almost nothing done to improve them over the 10 year period from 2000 to 2010.

"We are trying very hard to get all the main routes re-done but it can be difficult to keep up with the level at which potholes and other problems are appearing."

However, the Conservative councillor, who also serves on Wycombe District Council as well as the parish, confirmed new equipment has been purchased that can fill potholes at twice the speed as was previously possible.

He admitted the issue of roads is one of the key challenges facing the council over the next electoral term, and that only looking at ways of generating extra income would free up the funds needed.

BCC already brings in three to four million pounds a year by offering their expertise on education matter to other authorities.

But Cllr Appleyard admitted the extra cash may well have to take the form of higher taxes.

Once the major routes have been re-surfaced, he confirmed BCC hope to make a start on the minor roads as part of their road improvement plan.
