The dangerous and uncertain world of 1944 was experienced by visitors to the Epping Ongar Railway at the weekend.
Members of the Living History Society joined forces with the railway to recreate the highly charged atmosphere of secrecy and troop movements just before the D-Day landings.
The GI’s swarming across the country were represented by volunteers dressed as the 101st Airborne Division, and there was impressive support from vintage vehicles including Jeeps, and Dodge WC and military lorries.
Visitors were entertained by the A2 Jive band, and warned not to fall victim the spivs trying to strike shady deals.
Many visitors found themselves adjourning to the Kings Head in Ongar, a popular wartime bolthole, which gave prizes to those in the best period dress.
The next big event at the railway will be a fathers’ day display of vintage Morgans at North Weald Station on June 16.
