BURGLARS broke in to a High Wycombe home but left empty handed after being unable to gain access to the rest of the house, police said.

They gained access to the Chapel Lane house sometime between 8am on Monday and 8.40am on Tuesday by smashing a rear conservatory door.

Officers said they were unable to get in to the main house so fled.

With the clocks going back this weekend and the evenings drawing in, police are urging residents to take steps to deter would-be thieves.

Residents are urged not to leave valuables on display and ensure windows and doors are locked.

Officers also recommend either leaving a light on or buying a segment timer to switch on electrical devices and lights to give the impression someone is at home during the darkened hours.

Residents can also register their valuables for free at www.immobilise.com which enables police, insurers and second-hand traders to check and recover any stolen items.

Call police on the 101 enquiry line or the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111 with any information about the Chapel Lane burglary.
