I feel compelled to write this letter in reply to the article in the Free Press and the Star about Wycombe being the 9th crappest town in the country, nominated by a Curtley West.

I do not know who he or she thinks they are but if they do not like Wycombe that much I suggest they find another town and maybe they could find fault in that one.

I am High Wycombe born and bred. I love High Wycombe and I am sat here with steam coming out of my ears I am so incensed that some fool dared to nominate this great town as crappy.

How many other towns can you drive down into the centre of town, such as Marlow Hill or Amersham Hill, and see so much greenery with the lovely trees in full bloom?

As I am now at a mature age, I no longer frequent nightclubs etc. so I cannot comment on the status and popularity of the nightlife. All I can manage is an evening meal out at a great pub, which I believe there are quite a few of in Wycombe.

I always remember what my dear late mother said when she arrived in Wycombe High Street during the war. She got out of the coach and said wow at the view of the High Street.

In her words, she had never seen any street looking as lovely as that and I believe there are some great buildings in High Wycombe. We have the lovely Chilterns and Thames Valley on our doorstop.

However, I will say a few things about the state of the roads.

We have just returned from a lovely holiday in Yorkshire, in York City, East Riding and North Yorkshire, and not once did we see any potholes or roads in bad repair anywhere.

Even the small country lanes were really well maintained.

This is in an area I believe has more snow and hard frost than we do in South Bucks, and it also a very sparsely populated area so presumably not as much council tax obtained by the local authority and one would presume receives a smaller grant from Central Government to cover costs of road maintenance.

So full credit to the local authorities in Yorkshire and perhaps the guys from Buckinghamshire Highways, Bucks County Council, ought to take a visit to Yorkshire and just compare the state of the roads there.

I noticed one pothole in the centre of Wycombe at Frogmoor. It possibly does not quite come under category 1, i.e. 50cm deep.

I did not actually walk over and cause a traffic hold-up by measuring the depth but it must be well over 40cm, 1½ins deep and covers an area I would suggest well over 1½ square metres.

So, come on Bucks Highways, get your finger out and fill this hole in.
