I would wish to offer my support to Ms Kemp’s endeavour to get Bucks County Council to reconsider their position with regard to her daughter Harriet’s transport needs to get to school (BFP, October 11).

I, and the previous County Councillor Richard Pushman, from December until February this year, put the case to the Council that a review of their decision would seem appropriate.

The reply indicated quite clearly that the decision was based on “an adult accompanying the child on the walk to school” with no consideration given to Ms Kemp’s circumstances of being a working single mother and not in a position to do so.

While I understand the need to take good care of how the public’s money is spent, I cannot for the life of me come to terms with such inflexibility in this situation, especially when it was drawn to my attention in last week’s BFP edition the increase of 29 per cent for WDC Cabinet members allowances. The wrong message has indeed been sent out.

My final comment is with regard to the walking routes BCC recommended. The first was to go by crossing Great Kingshill Common and walking from Cockpit Lane along Spurlands End Road to Holmer Green School; no pavement on either side of road!

The second was to go by walking to Widmer End by way of the A4128 Missenden Road (BCC only now introducing – after six years of waiting – a 30mph restriction on this road),then on to Widmer End, North Road, which is still, after four years, being withheld finance for road safety measures (in particular, school walk). The funds available are with BCC from section 106 monies collected from the developer of the Wellesbourne Estate for infrastructure so should have been used accordingly by now!

These routes are not suitable for walks to school by anyone’s standards.

I feel that BCC should now revisit their decision with some due consideration for those in need of ours and their support.

Councillor Brian Swain, Hughenden Parish Council, Great Kingshill Ward
